Birthdays, spring break, a new toy are all things kids look forward to with much anticipation. As we grow up, we look forward to a day off from work, a new home, or vacation. What are you anticipating this season? Winter is one season I look forward to! The heat of summer is on its way out and the crispness of fall and changing leaves usher in the holiday season.
How do we build anticipation that leads to hope, peace and rest? One author offers several ways to foster anticipation for a hopeful holiday season that lasts far beyond December.
One author offeredthe following guidance:
- Keep Jesus in the center of your holiday. Read Matthew 1:18-2:33 and Luke 2:1-20
- Christ-center decorations: A Nativity scene, Jesus Birthday cupcakes are tangible ways for children with special needs to visualize the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
- Use an advent calendar with Scripture. This builds anticipation for faith in Jesus which leads to everlasting hope that extends beyond the holiday.
- Watch Christ-focused movies: The classic A Charlie Brown Christmas and The Nativity Story are two favorites.
- Use teachable moments when holiday messages focus on selfishness and materialism.
- Listen to Christ-exalting holiday music. Some recordings are made by children’s choirs.
- Make Christ-centered gifts for others.
- Read stories that focus on Christ during Thanksgiving and the holidays. A Thanksgiving with Jesus for Kids, and Kip and the Best Gift are examples of Christ-centered stories.
- Consider the cognitive level of your child and their attention span. My little one can only tolerate 15 minutes or so, keep it fun.
- Share Christ with others and serve others. Ministries at local churches begin by giving Thanksgiving packages to those in need and sponsoring Giving Trees at Christmas time. Schools, churches, and libraries have information about charitable activities in your community.
As you gather with anticipation and hang twinkling lights, may you remember Jesus is the reason for the season. Have a blessed and Christ-centered Holiday Season!
